City of Oregon City

Improving Support and Increasing Thought Leadership with Virtual CIO and PolarStar Managed Services.

At the start of 2013, it was apparent that Oregon City’s increased need for improved support and thought leadership in information technology demanded addressing. At the time, the city employed one full-time IT/GIS manager and used an outside network consultant for network, desktop, application, and user support.

The IT Manager found himself in a role where he was spending greater amounts of time servicing end-user requests, when he knew that expanding his strategic thinking would benefit the city much more.

Knowing it was time to bring a new vision for technology to the city, the IT Manager published an RFP for expanded outsourced IT services, with a goal of…  Read More

Exterior Wood

Increasing System and Network Availability and Reliability, and Ensuring Long-Term Continuity of Support

Exterior Wood, Inc., based in Washougal, WA, provides the widest array of pressure-treated products in the western United States and Canada. For over 35 years, Exterior Wood has been a family-owned business, growing by focusing on quality, being environmentally conscious, and by building strong relationships, both in-house and business-to-business.

As Exterior Wood’s business grew over the years, their technology requirements began to outgrow their network of “white box” computers. The business had evolved to have a much greater reliance on technology and the aging, out-of-warranty systems were insufficient for the task. In 2001, Polar Systems was contacted to help document their environment – what they had and what they needed; developing a strategic technology roadmap with options for Exterior to reach its goals. From then on,
Polar Systems was called in to help as needed, bringing “their toolboxes rattling around,” states Larry Miller, Exterior Wood MIS/IT Manager. Read More

Cowlitz Family Health Center

Providing a Network Infrastructure Update

THE SITUATION: Cowlitz Family Health Center (CFHC) of Longview, Washington, undertook a program to modernize their email and practice management systems. The task of updating a network infrastructure can be daunting, and is one that is often postponed because it can be like peeling an onion – you get through the outside layer only to discover that a simple update may not be sufficient and a more complete overhaul is needed. In the process, CFHC realized that their in-house IT person was not going to be fully capable of handling the upgrade alone.

ON REFERRAL: The project began when clinic managers decided that they needed to revamp their 25-year-old system for keeping patient records. To get recommendations on how to proceed, they hired a national medical consulting firm with expertise in the latest electronic medical records (EMR) and practice management systems. Along with making a recommendation on what new scheduling and billing system to use, the consultants recommended that CFHC hire an IT management firm to assist Cowlitz’ internal IT staff with the installation. Read More
